This installment of my mixtape delivery service was inspired by a Facebook group of all things.1 I think I’m hittin’ a wall is a space for indie music, physical activity, community, and mental health. Named after a lyric from The National, they describe it as “A place to share, training tips, encouragement, pictures, stories, race results, etc etc.”
That emphasis on “encouragement” is mine not theirs—but that word gets at why a few members of the band and I have taken a shine to these folks.2 The 1,000 strong group understands the formula that inspired me to fall in love with music in the first place: Music + community = a satisfying life. For the group, exercise isn’t about kicking ass, it’s about pushing forward in the company of friends.
A good segment of the membership also happens to embody a term used to describe a certain strain of indie rock fan: Sad Dads.3 You’ll find my playlist is well-designed for that demographic. These are upbeat songs but of a mid-tempo variety not likely to inspire a ‘roid rage vibe. (No shredding, no hyperactivity, nothing that risks a visit to the urgent care clinic.)
I hope you enjoy the music and if you’re curious to learn more about ITIHAW, pay a visit to their Internet website group. (And if you happens to be an ITIHAW member, or you’re curious to learn more about my label Brassland, listen to the Spotify version of this playlist. It includes a pair of podcasts where I discuss the label’s first two decades of existence.)
